Valheim is developed by Iron Gate studio, based in Skövde, Sweden. The game began its development as a solo project in 2017, until Iron Gate was founded as a company in 2019. The team has grown since then, but Iron Gate remains a small and independent studio.

Valheim was released into Early Access in February 2021.
